A Brief Guide To Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by unusual pauses in breathing during sleep. The instances of pauses in breathing may last from a few seconds to minutes. Clinically it must happen five times in an hour to fall under the definition of sleep apnea. Mild sleep apnea can occur on occasion due to respiratory illness.

One of the most common causes of sleep apnea is low muscle tone in the airway. This is a common problem for those who are obese, and can be linked with a large neck circumference. It is more common in men than women or children, and also occurs more frequently among the elderly. Smokers are also at a higher risk to develop sleep apnea.

Frequent and loud snoring can be one of the reasons for this disorder. However, snoring is not considered a health risk. The real problem arises when there are frequent starts and stops in breathing while you sleep. This becomes a potentially serious disorder that can be detrimental to your health.

Sleep apnea may prevent you from sleeping soundly at night, and as a consequence, you don't feel energetic and refreshed the next morning when you wake up. In order to treat this sleep apnea disorder, it is necessary to recognize and distinguish it from normal snoring. Medical treatments are available that can help treat this dangerous disorder.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, these are just some of the side effects of sleep apnea:

High blood pressure

Eye disorders, including glaucoma, conjunctivitis, and dry eye

Irregular menstrual periods

High-risk pregnancies

Liver damage

Seizures, epilepsy, and other nerve disorders

Diabetes

Kidney failure

Stroke

Heart failure

Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Recognizing sleep apnea is very difficult. The major signs of this disorder include loud and chronic snoring, long pauses in breathing, snorting, choking, or gasping during sleep and daytime sleepiness regardless of how much time you spend in bed.

Other common symptoms include restless sleep, insomnia, night time awakenings, waking up with a dry mouth, morning headaches, waking up feeling out of breath, irritability, depression, moodiness, difficulty in concentrating, forgetfulness, and going to washroom frequently during the night.

Snoring is not the only reason for this disorder. Normal snoring does not interfere with the quality of sleep but when you suffer from sleep apnea, you feel extremely tired and sleepy during the day. Remember, everyone who snores does not have sleep apnea and everyone who has sleep apnea does not snore. Even if you stop snoring at night, you may be suffering from this disorder. The major signal is how you feel during the day. If you remain drained of energy and feel very tired and depressed, you may be suffering from this disorder.

Anyone can suffer from sleep apnea including children, young adults, adults, and elderly people. If you are a smoker, overweight, over the age of 65 years, or somehow related to someone suffering from sleep apnea, you have a higher risk of suffering from this disorder.

Other than this, males are more prone to suffer from sleep apnea as compared to females. Additional factors such as enlarged tonsils, deviated septum, allergies, thick neck, receding chin, and nasal congestion also contribute to sleep disorder.

Treatments are many. The most common is a CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure. This is a machine that creates air pressure that does not allow breathing structures to collapse while you sleep. Other treatments include exercising the muscles; surgery to tighten the muscles.
